Common ISO/IEC 17025 Audit Findings and How to Avoid Them
Uncertainty budgets, traceability gaps, environmental records and competence documentation are the recurring ISO/IEC 17025 audit findings. Here is how to avoid them.
ISO/IEC 17025 audits are demanding, and even well-run laboratories accumulate findings. Knowing the common ones in advance makes them far easier to prevent.
1. Incomplete Measurement Uncertainty Budgets
Auditors frequently find uncertainty calculations that omit a real contributing factor, such as environmental drift or reference standard uncertainty, rather than being wrong outright. Every contributing component needs to be documented, not just the dominant one.
2. Gaps in Traceability Chains
A reference standard’s own calibration certificate has to be current and itself traceable. A lab using a reference standard whose own certificate lapsed, even briefly, creates a traceability gap that invalidates everything calibrated against it in that window.
3. Environmental Monitoring Records
Labs are required to monitor and record the environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) that affect measurement accuracy, not just control them. Missing or inconsistent logs are a very common minor finding.
4. Personnel Competence Records
Auditors check that every technician performing accredited work has documented training and demonstrated competence for that specific method, not just general experience. A skills matrix that has not been updated is an easy, avoidable finding.
5. Method Validation Documentation
Where a lab uses a non-standard or in-house method, the validation evidence proving that method works as intended is often incomplete or hard to locate quickly during an audit.
These are exactly the areas our own ISO 17025 lab consultancy and training service helps laboratories in Bangladesh prepare for, before an assessor finds them first.
