NDT Inspection: Industrial, Welding and Electrical Safety Testing

Our NDT inspection engineers find the crack, the thin wall and the hot joint before they stop your plant. Our inspection engineers test welds, vessels, tanks, pipelines and electrical systems on site, with a report you can act on.

  • Radiography testing / X-ray
  • Ultrasonic flaw detection
  • Dye penetrant & magnetic particle testing
  • Hardness testing
  • PWHT (post weld heat treatment)
  • Welding quality assessment & correction

Why It Pays

NDT Inspection Is Cheaper Than Downtime

A thickness survey on a corroded line, a thermography scan on a loaded panel or a weld check on a pressure part costs a fraction of the production loss that follows a failure — and it produces the documented evidence your insurer and your buyer expect.

  • On-site testing with minimum disruption, including shutdown windows
  • Clear photographic reporting with severity ranking
  • Practical corrective recommendations, not just findings
  • Combined visits with DIFE load testing and calibration — ask about scheduling NDT inspection alongside your next statutory test

Methods

Which NDT Method Finds Which Defect

No single technique sees everything. Choosing the wrong one is the most common reason a defect is missed, so here is what each method is actually good at.

Radiography (RT / X-ray)

Sees inside a weld or casting — porosity, slag inclusion, lack of fusion and cracks through the full thickness. It leaves a permanent film or digital image, which is why buyers and third-party inspectors often ask for RT specifically. Needs a controlled exclusion zone during shooting, so it is usually scheduled at night or in a shutdown.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Finds internal flaws and measures remaining wall thickness from one side only, with no radiation and no exclusion zone — so production can often continue nearby. The standard choice for in-service vessels, pipelines and structural welds where radiography is impractical.

Dye Penetrant (PT)

Reveals surface-breaking cracks on non-porous materials — stainless steel, aluminium, non-ferrous components. Simple, portable and inexpensive, but it only shows defects that reach the surface.

Magnetic Particle (MT)

Detects surface and slightly sub-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon steel. Faster than penetrant on steel welds and shafts, and it catches defects just under the surface that PT would miss.

Hardness Testing & PWHT

Confirms the material is as strong as the design assumes, and verifies that post-weld heat treatment actually achieved the required structure. Essential after repair welding on pressure parts, where an untempered weld can be harder and more brittle than the parent metal.

Thermography

Finds electrical hot spots under live load — loose terminations, overloaded circuits, failing breakers — before they become a fire or an unplanned outage. Non-contact, done while the plant runs, with a thermal image attached to every finding.

Method selection follows the material, the defect type you are guarding against and the access available. Our engineers confirm the method with you before mobilising, and international method standards are published by the ISO standards catalogue if your buyer specifies a particular one.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which NDT method should I use for weld inspection?

It depends on what you need to prove. Radiography gives a permanent image of internal weld defects and is what most third-party buyers ask for. Ultrasonic testing finds internal flaws without a radiation exclusion zone, so it suits in-service equipment. For surface cracks, magnetic particle testing is used on carbon steel and dye penetrant on stainless and non-ferrous materials. We confirm the method against your material and acceptance standard before the visit.

Do we have to shut down production for NDT inspection?

Usually not. Ultrasonic testing, thickness survey, hardness testing and thermography are all performed while the plant runs. Radiography is the exception — it needs a controlled exclusion zone, so we schedule it during a night shift or a planned shutdown window.

Is NDT inspection required for DIFE or buyer compliance audits?

NDT is not always named directly, but the evidence it produces is. Pressure vessel, boiler and structural integrity records are checked in DIFE inspections and in buyer technical audits, and a thickness survey or weld examination report is what demonstrates that integrity. Many clients schedule NDT in the same visit as their DIFE load testing to keep one combined file.

How often should an ultrasonic thickness survey be done?

Annually is the common baseline for pipelines, tanks and pressure vessels in corrosive or high-duty service, and more often where a previous survey showed measurable wall loss. The value comes from the trend: two surveys at a known interval let you calculate the corrosion rate and predict remaining service life, which a single reading cannot do.

What does the inspection report contain?

The method and standard applied, the exact locations examined with a location map, photographic or thermal evidence, findings ranked by severity, and practical corrective recommendations — not just a pass or fail line. The report is prepared so it can be handed directly to your insurer, your buyer or a DIFE inspector.
