ISO 17025 vs ISO 9001: What’s the Difference for a Calibration Lab?
ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 are often confused. Here is what each one actually certifies, and why only one of them proves a calibration result is accurate.
Every plant manager in Bangladesh eventually runs into two acronyms that sound similar but mean very different things: ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 9001. Buyers, auditors and procurement teams often ask for one or the other, and mixing them up can cost you an audit finding.
ISO 9001: A Management System Standard
ISO 9001 certifies that an organization has a consistent, documented quality management system: procedures, records, corrective actions and management review. Any business can be ISO 9001 certified, from a garment factory to a software company. It says nothing about whether a specific measurement is technically accurate.
ISO/IEC 17025: A Technical Competence Standard
ISO/IEC 17025 is stricter and narrower. It applies specifically to testing and calibration laboratories, and it certifies that the laboratory’s actual measurement results are technically valid: traceable reference standards, stated measurement uncertainty, competent personnel and controlled environmental conditions.
In short: ISO 9001 says a company runs a controlled process. ISO/IEC 17025 says a laboratory’s numbers are accurate and traceable. A calibration certificate is only as trustworthy as the accreditation behind it, which is why auditors specifically look for the ISO/IEC 17025 mark, not ISO 9001, on a calibration certificate.
Why This Matters When Choosing a Calibration Partner
Many providers advertise “ISO 9001 certified” as if it covers calibration competence. It does not. When evaluating a calibration company, check specifically for ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation scope covering the parameters you need calibrated, not just a general quality certificate.
